Properly closing your pool to prepare for the colder months ahead is essential to have a summer-ready pool next time around. When gearing up for winter, consider these pool maintenance tips to help keep your pool issue free.
- Leaves and debris – Fall pool cleaning requires the removal of fallen branches, sticks, and leaves. If you haven’t yet put on the cover for good, cleaning out any debris from the water in a timely manner will prevent algae from growing.
- Water levels – Fully draining your pool can cause structural issues, which is why it’s best to leave a good amount of water while allowing room for the cover to sink under the pressure of rain and snow. A good rule of thumb to follow is to keep the water level a few inches below the skimmer.
- Pool chemicals – Less water and lower air temperatures call for less chemicals. During the fall and into the winter, when your pool is not being used, a pH of 7.6-7.8 is ideal. In stagnant water, the chemical balance will naturally lower itself, so doing so accounts for the change.
- Filter – After a summer full of swimming, cleaning out your filter is essential in preparing for the winter. A fresh filter is more likely to catch any fallen foliage and debris.
- Heating cycle – If your pool has a heater, adjusting the setting to a lower cycle will save you money. Avoid totally turning off the heater as the pipes could freeze in low temperatures.
